Understanding the .pl Domain Lifecycle and Our Renewal Policy

.pl Domain Lifecycle and Policy

When you register a .pl domain name, you are essentially "leasing" it for a specific period (usually 1 year). To keep your website and email services running, the domain must be renewed before its expiration date.
However, the .pl registry (NASK) operates differently than many common extensions like .com or .net. To ensure you never lose ownership of your Polish domain, we have adjusted our billing cycles to match these specific requirements.

The .pl Difference: No "Grace Period"

For most global domains (.com, .org), there is a "Grace Period" of about 30 days after expiration where you can still renew at the normal price.
This is NOT the case for .pl domains. As soon as a .pl domain reaches its expiration date, it immediately enters a Redemption Period. Once a domain is in redemption:

  • Services Stop: Your website and email will immediately stop functioning.

  • High Fees: Reclaiming a domain from redemption is significantly more expensive than a standard renewal, as the Registry imposes steep recovery penalties.

  • Risk of Loss: The redemption period for .pl is short. If not reclaimed quickly, the domain is released to the public, where "domain snappers" often register it instantly.

Why Your Invoice Date May Differ from the Expiry Date

Because the .pl registry is so strict, we generate and bill our invoices well in advance of the actual expiration date.
You may notice a discrepancy between the "Due Date" on your invoice and the "Expiry Date" shown in WHOIS records. This is intentional and is designed entirely in your own interest.

  • Proactive Protection: By billing you early, we ensure that the payment is processed, cleared, and the renewal command is sent to the Registry.

  • Avoiding Redemption Fees: Our goal is to prevent your domain from ever touching the "Redemption" state, saving you from high recovery costs and service downtime.

  • Buffer for Transfers: If there are any issues with your payment method, the early invoice gives us enough time to contact you and resolve the matter before the domain is lost.

The Lifecycle Stages of a .pl Domain

  • Active Period: Your domain is live and functional. We will send your renewal invoice during this phase – invoice is generated 60 days prior and billed 20 days prior to renewal.

  • Expiration / Redemption (Immediate): If the invoice is not paid by the expiry date, the domain expires and enters redemption immediately. Your site goes offline. To get it back, you must pay the Registry’s redemption penalty.

  • Pending Delete: If not redeemed within 15–30 days, the domain enters a short deletion phase.

  • Released: The domain is deleted and becomes available for anyone else to register on a first-come, first-served basis.
